Tropical fish housed in a stylish aquarium make a colourful addition to brighten up any home or office.
If your house needs an injection of character, or you’re tired of working in a drab office, then consider purchasing an aquarium filled with tropical fish. Not only will they create a welcome splash of colour, but an aquarium of fish provides a relaxing sight for busy minds. However, you can’t just buy a tank and fill it with any fish, you have to know which fish will suit your home, and which will get on well with one another. These are just some of the more popular tropical fish that you could consider adding to your home aquarium.
Tropical Fish Categories
Before picking your favourites for your aquarium, it is worth bearing in mind that tropical fish come under six different categories, and you need to assess the pros and cons of each fish before purchase. These are the categories:
· Labyrinth Fish
· Catfish
· Characins
· Cichlids
· Cypriniformes
· Livebearers
Tropical Fish Favourites
These are just some of the more popular forms of tropical fish that you might like to consider for your aquarium.
Angelfish – Ideal for larger community tanks with long-leaved plants. Adults may eat smaller fish if they added to the tank after they have established their territory. One of the most colourful and recognisable forms of tropical fish.
Rainbow Fish – There are several varieties of rainbow fish to choose from, all of which boast beautiful colourings and markings. They are peaceful community fish that thrive best with lots of swimming space in a large planted tank.
Swordtail – A lovely bright orange fish that are generally compatible with others, but can be slightly aggressive. They add a real splash of colour to the tank.
Guppy – Small but perfectly formed little fish in colours like electric blue and red-blonde. They are peaceful fish, so don’t mix them with fin-nippers.
Harlequin – Pretty shimmery fish with a peaceful nature. Need dimmed lighting.
Clown Loach – A beautiful tropical fish with thick stripes, which grow up to 20cm in aquariums. Very peaceful, and need lots of hiding places in a large tank.
Tropical Fish: A Warning
If you don’t know anything about tropical fish, then you must either seek the advice of an expert, or spend a good deal of time reading about the different varieties. Some fish aren’t compatible and others can be very territorial and aggressive, so you do need to do some research in finding a good mix of fish. Once you know which species will live peacefully together, then you can go shopping for a beautiful aquarium and all your aquatics supplies to give them a great home.
